Title: Lake and Highway Sound and Noise in Okanagan Summer Tourism
Funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Development Grant.
Led by Dr. Sue Frohlick (University of British Columbia Okanagan, Anthropology/Gender and Women’s Studies).
Supported by The Collaborative and Experimental Ethnography Lab (CE2 Lab).
Purpose & Impacts of Project
The purpose of this research project is to explore locals’ and tourists’ experiences of lake and road traffic sound in the summer in the Okanagan. We want to better understand how people understand tourism-related sound and noise. We also want to study the impacts of tourism-related sound and noise to people’s experiences of place, community, and environment.
This project will provide new information in how tourism-related sound and noise are experienced in the Okanagan. This will provide new insights in the social, environmental, and sonic (sound) impacts of tourism to the area. These insights may be helpful to tourism organizations and local communities. This project will also contribute new knowledge to the growing field of sound studies.
